Clinical Guidelines For Implant Supported Overdentures

Program Description:

This program will provide a literature-based, systematic approach aimed at helping clinicians with treatment planning and the decision-making process for patients who would benefit from implant-supported overdenture therapy. The discussion will include an overview of the key clinical steps necessary for providing this care.

Program Objectives:

At the completion of the program, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the literature pertinent to planning treatment of edentulous and partially edentulous patients.
  • Identify the indications and contraindications for providing treatment with removable implant prosthodontics.
  • Understand that patient preferences may be different from patient needs, clinical factors, and finances, and be able to explain the economic differences between fixed and removable prostheses.
  • Understand how to modify a mandibular complete denture for use as an implant-retained overdenture.

Clinical Treatment: Edentulous Patients

Program Description:

This program will describe the benefits and limitations associated with conventional complete dentures, as well as, implant-retained or supported overdentures. Resilient attachment systems, framework design and bar-retained overdentures will be thoroughly discussed. The specific biologic benefits associated with implant overdenture treatment include denture retention and stability, bone preservation, improved soft-tissue health, improved nutrition and quality of life. Clinical examples and literature citations will include long-term clinical and patient satisfaction studies.

Program Objectives:

At the completion of the program, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the benefits and limitations of conventional complete dentures.
  • Discuss the benefits and limitations of implant-retained, assisted or supported overdentures.
  • Identify the clinical indications and contraindications associated with implant overdenture treatments.
  • Identify the specific clinical steps associated with fabrication of implant-retained or supported overdentures, including laboratory prescriptions, operatory set-ups and post-insertion instructions.

Dr. Schlissel received his dental degree from State University of New York at Buffalo and his Materials Science degree from Stony Brook University, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences in New York. He is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry and has been a member and officer in national and regional dental organizations. Dr. Schlissel is Professor Emeritus of General Dentistry, School of Dental Medicine at Stony Brook University, where he was Chair of the Department of General Dentistry and Director of the General Practice Residency Program.

James A. Rivers, DMD, MHS

Dr. Rivers, a Prosthodontist in Charleston, South Carolina, received his dental degree, Masters in Health Science degree and graduate prosthodontics training at Medical University of South Carolina. He has 45 years’ experience in dental academics and patient care with a focus on dental implant restorations. Dr. Rivers is a member of various professional organizations and received the Meritorious Achievement Award from the South Carolina Dental Association for his contribution to dental education and dental literature. He also received the MUSC clinician of the year award. He was awarded the Pierre Fauchard Academy Distinguished Dentist Citation for outstanding contributions to the art and science of dentistry and also received the Alumni Award of Honor from the College of Dental Medicine Alumni Association for his contribution to the profession, his alma mater and community. He has presented local, state, national and international invited lectures on implant dentistry. His lectures provide valuable information on all phases of dental implant restorative procedures.

Amy L. Ridall, DDS, MS, PhD

Dr. Ridall received a dental degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Dentistry. Following graduation, she earned a Master of Science in Oral Biology from SUNY Buffalo. She received her PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the UT Houston Health Science Center Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Certificate in Prosthodontics from the Dental Branch. In addition to private practice, she is a part-time Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics at the University of Texas Houston Health Science Center School of Dentistry where she serves as the Coordinator of Implant Programs for undergraduate and graduate programs. Dr. Ridall is on the faculty for the Zimmer Biomet Institute in Carlsbad, CA.

Maria D. Gonzalez, DDS, MS, FACP

Dr. Gonzalez is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics, she received her dental degree from Universidad Veracruzana in Veracruz, Mexico. Dr. Gonzalez worked in private practice for two years and then entered a preceptorship program in prosthodontics at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. She completed a residency and earned a master of science degree in prosthodontics from The University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHealth) School of Dentistry at Houston. Dr. Gonzalez has been on the University of Texas School of Dentistry faculty since 2002. In 2008 and 2019 she received the Dean's Teaching Excellence Award for Scholarship in Teaching. In 2009 Dr. Gonzalez was elected to faculty membership in the Mu Mu Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society. Currently, she is a full-time associate professor and Advanced Education in Prosthodontics Program Director in the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics and maintains a private practice limited to prosthodontics. Dr. Gonzalez is active in providing Continuing Education for Dentists, providing courses on Dental Implantology at the ZimVie Institute in Carlsbad, CA.
